history
Alfred Wegner formed the foundation for the plate tectonics theory. The first thing that Wegner noticed was that the seven continents fit together. He research and found more evidence of a super continent, but didn't know exactly how continents where able to move. The evidence he found consisted of fossils that would not have the ability to swim over an ocean, also glacier marks in Africa and the ancient weather patterns. Higher scientist didn't believe in this theory until years later after Alfred Wegner passed away. Harry Hess was the next piece to the plate tectonics puzzle. Hess formed the sea spreading theory which put the 'why' in Wegners theory. Hess was a navy officer who decided to survey the ocean floor with new technology. He noticed the ridges and trenches in the sea floor and connected his theory to Wegner's and that's the theory we go by today.
